Meeting is on SATURDAY, OCTOBER 26th, at the latest at 05:45 am, at EROII REVOLUȚIEI (the Heroes of Revolution) Square in Bucharest, next to the SUBWAY ACCESS and the bus station. The academic waiting period for those who are late starts at 05:45. At 06:00 we are on the road! After a series of technical stops regarding customs formalities and currency exchange, we start towards the three objectives of the day.
The first one is at the Hotnitsa Canyon, which can be explored on a route for those who like adventure, on the Hotnitsa eco-trail made up of vertical wooden stairs and small bridges, the last 10 meters from the exit of the canyon being crossed by easy climbing (not recommended for those with fear of height).
The second stop of the day is at the Emen Canyon, which starts with a panoramic path on the left slope, then descends into its depth, at the Momin Skok Waterfall, on a sloping path which in the rainy periods gets very slippery. Watch out for the shoe you choose!
We end the day with a visit to the medieval town of Veliko Târnovo, which will include the panorama point on Sveta Gora hill, then a tour of Gurko Street where our hotel is located (we also make the accommodation), then visit the most awaited and most well-known objective of the day – Tsarevets Fortress (be prepared for a small entry fee). The evening continues with a free nighttime tour of the medieval city, as you wish, without a guide.
SUNDAY, OCTOBER 27, we wake up at 07:30 to have breakfast (included in the price you will pay to the agency). At 09:00 we go in coach towards the three objectives of the day. The first of these is the Buzludzha peak, which before 1974 was 1441 meters high. Human intervention reduced its official altitude to 1432 meters. Most of the historical events from the modern period of the Balkan state took place in these mountains. A 70-meter high tower serves as a base for the red star, with a circular body about 57 meters in diameter. Only 8 years after the inauguration, in 1989, the leader Totor Jivkov was dismissed following a coup d’etat that took place in the context of the fall of the European communist regimes. The Buzludzha monument, symbol of the old regime, was closed, vandalized and eventually abandoned.
Our next stop is at the Open Air Ethnographic Museum ETAR, a magnificent museum that presents the Bulgarian customs, culture and craftsmanship. The complex’s goal is to illustrate the architecture, way of life and economy of Gabrovo and the region during the Bulgarian National Revival (be prepared for a small entry fee).
Our last stop is at the Dryanovo Monastery, a 12th-century historical monument, in an impressive natural setting, along the Dryanovska River. Only 500 meters away is the mysterious Bacho Kiro Cave, named like this in honor of Bulgarian National Revival leader, teacher and revolutionary Bacho Kiro. The cave is a four-storey labyrinth of galleries and corridors with a total length of 3,600 m (11,800 ft), 700 m (2,300 ft) of which are maintained for public access and equipped with electrical lights (be prepared for a small entry fee).
We arrive back in Bucharest around 23:00, just on time to catch the last subway train from EROII REVOLUȚIEI station. It will be our unique stop in Bucharest.
